The Romance of Snowshoeing
We are so fortunate to be living in Ontario where we have the opportunity to enjoy four beautiful and unique seasons, with winter quite possibly being the most magical of them all.
The forest seems to take on a majestic quality when the first flakes fall and cling to the long bare branches of the maple trees and tuck themselves so perfectly in between each needle of the evergreens until the branches are coated and overflowing with fluffy magnificence.
Winter wonderland is a term so often used it becomes a cliche, but after a few inches of fresh snow falls, and you put on a pair of snowshoes to stroll through the woods with the one you love, it will be difficult not to exclaim in unison ….”This is a Winter Wonderland” !
When the snow falls and the trees and ground are laden with a few fluffy inches, a silence seems to envelope the two of you as if a magical insulating blanket has covered the world dampening all sound but the gentle crunching of your snowshoes, and your quiet conversation as you traverse the meandering forest trails.

Every Turn is a New Adventure
When first arriving at the Black River Retreat we began to make our plan and vision of how to cultivate the natural beauty of the woods into a park of forested trails, enabling guests to snowshoe in the winter along winding trails, while enjoying the beauty of the river and natural setting along the beautiful forested ravine.
The trails developed over time, meandering through our six acre property following the gently flowing river and criss crossing up and down the ravine, winding towards the breathtaking beach front. The natural curvature of the forest encourages you to explore every inch of the breathtaking views of rocks, water, and trees that contribute to the beauty of our beloved Canadian Shield.
With so many magnificent vistas throughout the property, we felt it fitting to create little “garden rooms”, sitting areas that allow you a place to stop and relax while on your stroll, surrounding you with natural beauty to enjoy peace and tranquility. They are a little excuse to stop time for a few minutes while taking the opportunity to share gentle words and a tender embrace with the person you love so much. The garden rooms are scattered throughout the riverfront and enchanted forest, with a different and unique view from each that encapsulates another special and unique experience throughout your adventure in the woods.
The forest with its natural elements of rock, water, and trees, is the perfect place to relax, and take a break from the hectic pace and stresses in your life. You need to feel the natural energy of the woods, and stroll at a relaxed pace, absorbing the freshness of the air and the beauty that surrounds you. Sit at each garden room and enjoy the feeling of doing absolutely nothing. Without the distraction of the busy world, you can sit and relax, hold the hand of the one you love, and feel at peace.

Baby Steps
If you have never had the opportunity to try snowshoeing, you will be remarkably surprised at just how easily you are able to walk through the woods with seemingly enormous clown shoes on.
It seems counterintuitive that the larger the footwear the easier the walking, but with a pair of snowshoes attached to your boots, the surface area of the snowshoes allows you to travel over the top of the snow rather than sink into the snow. When several beautiful inches of fresh powder falls and you are strolling through the woods, you will be amazed to look back upon your trail and see that your footsteps have sunk only a couple of inches into the powdery trails.
After only a few steps you will become comfortable with the feeling of walking with a wider stance to accommodate the size of the snowshoes, and will easily master raising your toes above your heels with your steps as you marvel at the beauty of a forest in the winter time.
Modern snowshoes are far lighter and easier to negotiate than their rawhide ancestors, with the benefit of more stable bindings and metal ice cleats on the bottom to ensure secure footing on trails and hills, allowing you to enjoy the pleasure of a stroll without the encumbrance of ankle strain, or slippery footfalls.
Just like every new experience, start with slow baby steps until you get the feel for your snowshoes, and enjoy every moment of a magical day in the snowy enchanted forest with the one you love.

Winter is a magical time to getaway with the one you love for a romantic couples retreat in the Ontario Highlands, where you are surrounded with the beauty of pristine snow covering the trees in the forest as the flakes on the ground glitter like a sea full of diamonds sparkling in the sunlight.
Your winter escape is your chance to put on a couple of layers of warm comfy clothing, and instead of hiding away from the cooler temperatures, enjoy a relaxing stroll, snowshoeing through the forest while breathing in crisp fresh pine scented air with the one you love.
